SQILL - The final piece in the renovation puzzle

“SQILL really gets my guests talking” says James Gold, who had been searching for almost a year to complete his showcase Georgian town house renovation, with the perfect centrepiece table to fit his stylish living room.

Excited to find a new furniture company in the UK that designs and makes innovative furniture, James was delighted to discover and work with Clay Designs, the producers of SQILL. “I wanted a piece in the living room which would wow everyone who entered and I am happy to say that SQILL does just that”, comments James. “The light produced from within the table is beautifully balanced and the tone enhances the incredible characteristics of the figured sycamore, which is the eye-catching surface material that I selected.”

SQILL was launched by British furniture company Clay Designs, at the 100% Design London exhibition last autumn, where James was struck by the outstanding concept.

The designer, David Chapman, believes that SQILL is unique by being the first in the world to incorporate rechargeable ambient lighting within a highly customisable table design. David goes on to explain that “SQILL has the flexibility for clients to choose from pre-designed sizes and finishes, or the design can be creatively modified to compliment specific interiors and styles.”

Each SQILL can be placed in a variety of positions, as there are no fixed cables, so it not only enhances the characteristics of the design and chosen finish of each table, but also provides an indulgent mood lighting anywhere within the individual interior design setting.

Producing each item of furniture requires a keen eye for detail as well as a hand craft approach to ensure that the end result lives up to the elegance and quality that Clay Designs prides itself upon. Each timber layer is selected to highlight the wood's natural grain, while the balanced light interacts with the finish to bring it alive.

When James commissioned his SQILL, he had already completed the living room layout and interior décor in his newly-renovated house which meant the first step was to select the table finish. He decided that grey was the order of the day so Clay Designs began the search for the perfect wood grain to suit the opulent surroundings of the room. James chose a stained grey, figured sycamore, with a velvety finish and shimmering ripple markings to the eye, so that it sits beautifully between his crushed velvet grey sofas on either side.

After eight weeks from the initial order, the installed table now provides a spectacular final piece to complete this elegant room. SQILL transforms its appearance throughout the day, as the natural light changes until, when the sun dips below the horizon, the integrated illumination is switched on to provide a warm welcome to the evening.

“SQILL is so much more versatile than other tables” praises James “a unique product, an original design and the fact that each table is handmade in the UK really appeals to me” he adds. “I am impressed with the attention to detail and attentive service from Clay Designs so I recommend them highly to both friends and associates.”

“We are very pleased to have worked with James” says Roxanne Needham, David Chapman’s business partner at Clay Designs “being able to vary the design to match the customer’s requirements exactly, by adapting the design and materials appropriately, is a vital part of our business.”
