The Brewery, Limassol, Cyprus

The brewery in Limassol hopes to cash in on pent-up demand for a pub that provides a retreat from the stresses of everyday life. In an exercise in reverse psychology, giant posters provide a reminder of what it’s like ‘out there’.

Project description

Limassol, Cyprus’s second-largest city is a popular tourist resort with rich archaeology and history, and it is peppered with clubs, restaurants and bars. The Brewery is a pub aimed at the city’s ‘upmarket crowd,’ says designer Perciles Liatsos whose eponymous company had already designed two restaurants owned by the Varoshiotis Group when he was commissioned to ‘create a new concept for the classic pub, that would offer a unique design.’

The venue is designed as an escape, hence the striking photography of apparently, stressed people, which ‘expresses the agony of today’s life that can’t touch us now we’re enjoying our food and wine.’ The Brewery serves patrons from 10am to 2am, offering cafe fare such as coffees and sandwiches alongside an international lunch and dinner menu that visits Italy, the Caribbean and Mexico, and kebabs.

The design has intriguing features such as a specially-built, giant, golden table under which customers walk to enter the main space. Portraits line the bar front, resembling stills from Sam Taylor-Wood’s silent films. The bar area with its onyx surround is lined with outsized chess pieces, black along one counter, white opposite. The seating throughout has the appearance of traditional furniture with scrolled details and carved wood, yet it has hints of extravagance: the wood is painted silver. Suede and reptile skin were among the other materials used in the fit-out. Hunting trophies are mounted on exposed brick walls, above floor lamps with stands shaped like rifles.

The eclectic interior also has an unusual perch for the DJ, who has a ladder to climb and looks out over the diners.
