When it come to designing its own new studios Project Orange used rich and unexpected materials to bring warmth and personality to the premises in Hoxton, conceived as an ‘urban sanctuary’.

‘Our starting point was to create a space that we felt reflected our personality as a practice,’ says director James Soane, who was keen to create a studio that was both professional and had atmosphere. The result is a collage of favourite materials, many of which have been used in previous Project Orange projects.

Everything used has a story, says Soane. One of the most striking features is the 15m-long patterned carpet runner, created in a pattern inspired by the texture of concrete on an Sixties’ ecclesiastical building that Soane and fellow Project Orange director Christopher Ash spotted and photographed in Girona, Spain.

This runs the length of the office and is offset by white tiling that covers the walls and a long island unit layout bench. ‘It’s quite Barbican-y and is practical and robust,’ says Soane.

In the meeting room, walls are clad in felt, which the practice also used in a house project in Judd Street, near King’s Cross. Shelving is in a Festival of Britain colour scheme, which Soane and Ash also specified for their own home in Suffolk. The cosy timbered kitchen has a different ambience again – warm and rustic.

The result, says the practice, is a ‘collection of textures, forms and memories’ curated into a hybrid space that reflects how it works and sees the world.
